VICTORIA FOUND the constant panning and sifting of sediment in the creekbed relaxing as she continued to wonder over what had happened last night…and Zack’s careless dismissal of it. Had it been Zack in the dark? Had she imagined it? Could it have been Johnny Bolero? No, that was preposterous. She shut her eyes against her confusion.

Sun dappled the leafy branches and warmed her skin as she listened to the sound of horses clopping down the stream toward her. Bandits, die soon saw. Their leader was dressed completely in black. Was it the same man she’d seen in the barbershop? she wondered, noting the black kerchief pulled up over his nose, hiding his face. His black Stetson was drawn down to shield his eyes. He reached for her and slung her over his saddle in front of him.

The men riding with him laughed. “How we gonna divide her up?” one of them wondered out loud.

“She’s not part of the loot. She’s mine.” He looked around the group, his dark eyes dangerous above the black kerchief. “Anybody got any problem with that?” His question met with silence. “Okay, let’s move.”
